Indian Weight Loss Diet – What Is It?
Thursday, September 10th, 2009When I first came across this term, I thought “that’s interesting – an Indian weight loss diet must mean a diet on which one can eat Indian food”. Well, it’s true to say that it’s perfectly possible to cook healthy Indian food as this article Indian Food as Part of a Weight Loss Regime will tell you, but I thought that this must be a specific diet, perhaps one with meal plans and tips for replacing high fat, high cholesterol ingredients, such as ghee, with lower cholesterol ones such as olive oil.
How naive I was; I checked out loads of websites, many of which turned out to be written in Hindi but they were all blogs or travelogues, not diet plans at all. Apparently the “Indian weight loss diet” refers to the fact that you lose weight if you pick up a stomach bug when travelling in India, along the lines of Montezuma’s revenge! I don’t think I need to go into too much detail here but suffice to say that when you suffer from sickness and diarrhoea, especially for a prolonged period of time, you are bound to lose weight. Thus was the myth of the Indian weight loss diet exploded for me – what a pity, I was quite excited about the prospect of indulging my love of Indian food while being “on a diet”.
